A regional view

The South East holds one of England's largest — and most contested — independent sectors.

From the university cities of Oxford and Canterbury to commuter towns strung along the M3 and M23, and out to the harbour cities of Portsmouth and Southampton, the South East is one of the most densely populated corners of the UK — and one of the most heavily fought over by corporate veterinary groups.

In the Home Counties, an independent practice often means a clinician who's known three generations of the same family — and their dogs.

Even so, a substantial number of practices have stayed in local hands. Long-established family clinics sit alongside newer clinician-owned start-ups, particularly in Brighton, Guildford and the Thames Valley, where independent owners have been quick to answer clients looking for continuity of care.

This guide lists the independent veterinary practices we've identified across the South East, organised by city and town. Where a practice is under long-standing local ownership, we've noted it. Where a practice has just opened, we've flagged it. The aim is simple: make it straightforward for South East pet owners to find — and stay with — an independent vet.
