A regional view
Where corporate consolidation has reshaped large parts of English veterinary care, Scotland has held more of its independent character. Around forty percent of practices north of the border remain locally owned — a figure that drops well below thirty percent in some English regions. The reasons are part geography, part professional culture: Scotland's mix of dense urban catchments and dispersed rural communities has favoured smaller, owner-led practices that can adapt to local need.
In the Highlands, independent practice often means mixed practice — a clinician who sees a Border collie in the morning and a flock of sheep by lunchtime.
The Central Belt — the corridor from Edinburgh to Glasgow — accounts for roughly two-thirds of Scotland's independents, concentrated around the suburbs of both cities. Outside that corridor, the nearest alternative might be sixty miles away. The Highlands and Islands in particular depend on these generalist practices, where versatility isn't optional.
This guide lists every independent veterinary practice we've identified in Scotland, organised by city and town. Where a practice has been in continuous local ownership for decades, we've noted it. Where a practice has just opened its doors, we've flagged it. The aim is simple: make it straightforward for Scottish pet owners to find — and stay with — an independent vet.
